Newton(2017) is a black comedy drama film written and directed by Amit V. Masurkar. The film stars the brilliant actors Rajkumar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Anjalu Patil and Raghubir Yadav. This is Amit’s second feature film after his debut film Sulemani Keeda in 2013. The film has been produced by Manish Mundra under Drishyam Films also known for film like Masaan(2015)
Newton with its straightforward story was officially selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards. The film has also had world premiere in the Forum section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. The film had received critical acclaim around the globe. It was also awarded the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. The actor Pankaj Tripathi, played the role of a police officer in the film, won a special mention at the 65th National Film Awards.
Newton(Rajkumar Rao) is a young and idealistic government officer who has the responsibility to conduct his very first election duty with utmost honesty and integrity. Although he is incharge of a total 76 eligible voters and is in the middle of the jungle infested with Maoist rebels. He is assigned a local police officer(Pankaj Tripathi) who plays a crucial role between the local and Newton. While the conflicts between the Moist and the police arise, the locals find it hard to understand why the elections are important.
The film is extraordinary in every sense. It’s a political satire on the world’s largest democracy and how the elections are conducted. It definitely raises many debates on law and order in the public discourse.
