Laila (Kalki) has cerebral Palsy , goes to study in college and writes songs for the college band. She falls for the lead singer of the band but he rejects her. Laila feels heartbroken and fortunately she is offered a scholarship to study at New York University. There she meets Khannum( Sayani Gupta) who is blind . They both come close to each other . Laila is confused about her sexuality. Laila’s mother’s death leaves her alone . She is seen in the end, sipping Margarita with a straw.
This 2014 film is produced by Shonali Bose in partnership with Viacom 18 Motion Picture and co-written by Bosdd and Nilesh Maniyar. Her film had premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival . It was screened at the Tallinn Black nights, the BFI London, Vesoul Festival of Asian cinema and the Galway Film Fleadh. The film received many positive reviews on its release on 17 april, 2015. Kalki Koechin received a Screen Award for Best Actress and The National Film Award-special jury award. Director Shonali Bose got the NETPAC award at toronto.
Kalki’s performance is praise-worthy . Her posture and control over her hands were remarkable. Though she is limited by cerebral Palsy but isn’t constrained but only in the entire film. She explores the two worlds-inside and outside.
