Lipstick under my Burkha is a black comedy film on the lives of the four women played by Ratna Pathak, Konkona sen sharma , Aahana Kumar and Plabita Borthakur. The film is written and directed by Alankrita Srivastava and produced by Prakash Jha. The film has received many critical acclaim due to its intention to open the opportunity to discuss female sexuality. Though it had to wait for the release in India as it was seen as ‘Lady Oriented’ and projected very bold female characters that expressed their rights to freedom in different ways.
The four women looked for more dignity and sexual authority and to live a life they want with freedom. Buaji(Ratna Patak) who is a widow is forced to hide her love for the hindi pulp novels and her crush for the swimming instructor. She is restricted to feel her sexuality at the age of 55 while the males at the age of 56 are looking for the brides to remarry.
In the same block of flats lives Shireen(Konkona Sen Sharma), a mother of three, who is reduced to a sex object by her saudi-returned husband with all the pills she takes to avoid the pregnancy. She is a saleswoman but she can sell the idea of condoms to her husband.
The college girl, Rihanna(Plabita) who is forced by her parents to stitch burkas but she is a Miley Cyrus fan and wants to become a singer.
They all live in a building named Hawai Manzil as they have been living in their own fancy castles in the air.
