Black is directed by Snajay Leela Bhansali, which is about a deaf-blind girl, Michelle, who also develops Alzheimer disease. Rani Mukherjee plays the role of this girl, while her teacher’s role is played by Amitabh Bachchan. The film is certainly inspired by Helen Keller .
Michelle is a frustrated, violent and uncontrollable eight year old girl due to her inability to see, hear and express since the age of two. Debraj, Amitabh takes it upon himself to build Michelle into someone who can express and communicate. Although Debraj’s efforts go in vain as he hardly manages to teach her a few words and manners. He decides to leave the place and throws Michelle in a fountain of water. This incident leaves an impact on Michelle and she gets ready to take lessons.
It’s the journey of Michelle and Debraj, after she grows up, Debraj gets her admission in college and makes her the first blind-deaf girl to attend college. Amitabh and Rani gives an outstanding performance and it’s one of the few films made by a mainstream director.
The film was screened in the Casablanca Film Festival and the International Film Festival of India. The film aso won Filmfare Award as the best film. The Time Magazine has also selected the film as one of the 10 best films of the year 2005. The film was also premiered in the Marche Du Film section of the Cannes Film Festival. The actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee were awarded National Film Awards and Filmfare for best actors.
